- 1884 - Philologist Elias Lönnrot, who compiled the Kalevala, dies.
- 1956 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes letter 185.
- 1989 - Heren Hyarmen, the oldest still existing Tolkien Society in the Southern Hemisphere, is founded by Ronald E. Krymse in São Paulo, Brasil. On January 9, 2003, the name was changed to Heren Hyarmeno, with the correct Quenya genitive to mean "Order of the South".
- 2000 - Fraser Kerr, who voiced Saruman in Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings, dies.
