- 1884 - Philologist Elias Lönnrot, who compiled the Kalevala, dies.
- 1956 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 185.
- 1989 - Heren Hyarmen, the oldest still existing Tolkien Society in the Southern Hemisphere, is founded by Ronald E. Krymse in São Paulo, Brasil. On January 9, 2003, the name was changed to "Heren Hyarmeno", the correct Quenya genitive to mean "Order of the South".
- 2000 - Fraser Kerr, who voiced Saruman in the 1978 animated film version of The Lord of the Rings, dies.
