On Earth
- 1944 – J.R.R. Tolkien receives a letter from 12 year old John Barrow from West town, PA. The boy has already read The Hobbit eleven times, and his use of the term "Gee Whiz" delights Tolkien.
- 1952 - Tolkien writes letter 135.
- 1955 - Tolkien writes letter 173.
- 1964 - The third episode of the Princess-serialization of The Hobbit is published.
- 1997 - Don Messick, who voiced Balin and the Lord of the Eagles in Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit, dies.
- 2007 - The eleventh book of The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, Prisoner of the Free Peoples, is released in North America.
