- 1944 – J.R.R. Tolkien receives a letter from 12 year old John Barrow from West town, Pa.. The boy has already read The Hobbit eleven times, and his use of the term "Gee Whiz" delights Tolkien.
- 1964 - The third episode of the Princess-serialization of The Hobbit is published.
- 1997 - Don Messick, who voiced Balin and the Lord of the Eagles in Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit, dies.
