Afteryule was the first month of the Shire calendar, thirty days immediately following the holiday of Yule (hence its name), and approximately corresponding to modern 23 December through 21 January. This month was called Frery in Bree and in the Eastfarthing[1]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name represents a modernization of the Old English name for January, æfterra ġēola.[2]
