am is a preposition meaning "up, upwards, upon" in Sindarin. It is the root of amon, meaning "hill". Compare with amba in Quenya.

Examples:

Amlach = "Uprising Flame"
Amroth = "Up-climber"
amloth = "Uprising Flowers"
