Angrod was a son of Finarfin and Eärwen and a lord of the Noldor.
He was the elder brother of Aegnor and Galadriel, and the younger brother of Finrod Felagund. Together with Aegnor he held the highlands of Dorthonion against Morgoth. Angrod and Aegnor were both slain in the Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame").
History
Angrod was the first of the Noldorin Exiles to enter Doriath as a messenger from Finrod. Upon returning with a terse warning from Thingol, he was mocked by Caranthir for relaying what was perceived as an empty threat. Angrod was angered by this, having omitted negative details of their exile like the First Kinslaying.[1]
Later while visiting Galadriel (who was living in Doriath at the time) with his brothers, Thingol accused them of deceiving him for hiding their misdeeds against his kin. Angrod spoke out in anger, pointing out the grievous wrongs they endured as well. This led directly to Thingol banning the use of Quenya throughout Beleriand.[2]
Together with Aegnor he held the highlands of Dorthonion against Morgoth. Aegnor and Angrod were both slain in the Dagor Bragollach by the flames from Thangorodrim.[3]
Etymology
Angrod's father-name was Angaráto, meaning "Iron Champion" in Quenya, from anga ("iron") + aráto ("champion"). The name Angrod is the Sindarinized form of Angaráto. It probably that both he and Finrod received first the same name Aráto, and this later differentiated to Findaráto and the above. Because of his early strength of hands, Angrod's epessë was Angamaitë ("Iron-handed"), from anga + maitë. This would explain that ang- was used by his father as a differentiating prefix.[4]

Other versions of the legendarium
From the early writings till after the publication of the first edition of The Lord of the Rings, Orodreth is given as Angrod and Felagund's brother. This was retained in the published Silmarillion, but in later works, Angrod became the father of Orodreth and the grandfather of Gil-galad.[5]
Notes
- ↑ J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.), Morgoth's Ring, "The Annals of Aman", p. 106 lists 1300 as the birth of Finrod (then named "Inglor") and 1362 as the birth of Galadriel
- ↑ Years of the Sun. Each Year of the Tree is equal to 9.582 Years of the Sun, and the Years of the Trees ended in the year 1500. So, 455 + 9.582 x 138 = 1,777; 455 + 9.582 x 200 = 2,371.
