Azaghâl was the king of the Broadbeam Dwarves of Belegost during the First Age. During the Nirnaeth Arnoediad ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears") the Dwarves of Belegost covered the retreat of the Sons of Fëanor by surrounding the Dragon Glaurung. They hewed at him with there axes, for his scales were not strong enough to shield the blows of Dwarf axes. And in his rage Glaurung struck down Azaghâl, and crawled over him. With his last breath Azaghâl drove a knife into his belly, and so wounded him that he fled the field with many of the dismayed Beasts of Angband following. Then the Dwarves raised up the body of their king and bore him away; and with slow steps they walked behind singing a dirge in deep voices, as it were a fueral pomp in their country, and gave no heed to their foes; and none dared attack them.

The Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin was originally made for him by Telchar. But he gave the helm to Maedhros for saving his life and treasure. For Azaghâl was upon the Dwarf road in East Beleriand when he was waylaid by Orcs, and Maedhros came to his rescue.

It is speculated that Azaghal's grandfather or great-grandfather may have been the father of the House of the Broadbeams, which he first awoke in the early Years of the Trees.
