Bain was the King of Dale, the second of the restored line.

History

Bain was the son of Bard the Bowman, and succeeded his father in T.A. 2977. He ruled in the lands south of the Lonely Mountain for thirty years, during which Balin and a group of Dwarves left Erebor to retake Moria.

He was succeeded by his son Brand in T.A. 3007, whose realm was said to extend far to the south and east of Esgaroth.[1]

Etymology

As the Language of Dale is rendered with Old Norse, the name perhaps represents Beinn meaning "mover".[2]

Portrayals in adaptations

2012-14: The Hobbit (film series):

While in canon there is no mention about Bain's birth year, and there is nothing to indicate that he was alive during the events of The Hobbit, in the films Bain is already in his early teens and has two sisters, Sigrid and Tilda. He is played by John Bell.[3]

2013: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:

Bain assists his father Bard in smuggling Bilbo Baggins and Thorin and Company into their house. When the Dwarves see a wind lance outside their window, they recall the Sack of Erebor, and Bain relates the story of how Girion managed to knock one of Smaug's scales loose in the attack, though the Dwarves don't believe him. Just before being arrested, Bard instructs Bain to hide the last Black Arrow he has in his possession. When Bolg's Orc pack attacks Lake-town, Bain assists Legolas, Tauriel, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, and Bofur fight off the Orcs and protect his sisters the best he can.

2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:

Bain, Sigrid, and Tilda follow Tauriel and the Dwarves to evacuate Lake-town via boat while Smaug is destroying it. When he sees Bard making a last stand against the Dragon, Bain goes off to find the boat in which he hid the Black Arrow, and manages to deliver it to his father atop the bell tower. Bard constructs a large makeshift bow from the tower to fire the arrow at Smaug, using his son's shoulder to balance and aim the arrow. Bard urges him to stay calm as he fires the shot that ultimately kills the Fire-drake. Later, as the Battle of Five Armies is getting underway, he and his sisters go into hiding in the ruins of Dale until the battle is over.
