Bill is a name used by Tolkien for several characters in Middle-earth, and is a name in its own right outside the legendarium.
Middle-earth
Bill was a first name used in the Shire and Bree. J.R.R. Tolkien stated he used it to translate Westron Bil, which is a short for (untranslated and further unknown) names as Arambil, Bildad and Bilcuzal.[1] It is possibly related to Adûnaic bêl-, "love", as seen in Azrubêl, a name of Eärendil the Mariner.[2]
- Bill Ferny, a man of Bree.
- Bill the Pony, Sam's loyal pony.
- Bill Butcher, a character from Perry-the-Winkle.
- William Huggins, sometimes referred to as "Bill".
Real world
Bill is short for William.
- Billy Boyd, actor.
- William Elvin, singer.
- Bill Johnson, actor.
- Bill Nighy, actor.
- William Squire, actor.
- Bill Welden, linguist.
