Bill is a name used by Tolkien for several characters in Middle-earth, and is a name in its own right outside the legendarium.

Bill was a first name used in the Shire and Bree. J.R.R. Tolkien stated he used it to translate Westron Bil, which is a short for (untranslated and further unknown) names as Arambil, Bildad and Bilcuzal.[1] It is possibly related to Adûnaic bêl-, "love", as seen in Azrubêl, a name of Eärendil the Mariner.[2]
