Bofur was one of the companions of Thorin Oakenshield during the Quest of Erebor, and was the brother of Bombur and a cousin of Bifur. He later fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies, and made his dwelling in Erebor.

Bofur was a descendent of Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, but was not of Durin's line, which means he was of either the house of the Firebeards or the Broadbeams.
