Bofur was one of the companions of Thorin Oakenshield during the Quest of Erebor, and was the brother of Bombur and a cousin of Bifur. He later fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies, and made his dwelling in Erebor.

Bofur was a descendent of Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, but was not of Durin's line, which means he was of either the house of the Firebeards or the Broadbeams.

Other versions of the Legendarium

In Tolkien's unfinished rewrite of The Hobbit (published in The History of The Hobbit) Bofur, along with Bifur and Bombur, is said to be Thorin's attendant.
