Ciryandil (Q, pron. [kiˈrʲandil]; T.A. 820[1]1015,[2] aged 195 years) was the fourteenth King of Gondor and the third of the Ship-kings.

History

He succeeded his father Eärnil I in 936[2] and continued Eärnil's naval policies. He spent much of his life to maintain the Haven of Umbar that was captured by his father. He defended the haven against the Haradrim, who were led by the Black Númenóreans, whom his father had driven off Umbar.[3]

In T.A. 1015 he was slain in Haradwaith while Umbar was besieged[4] and was succeeded by his son Ciryaher, also known as Hyarmendacil I.[2]

Etymology

Ciryandil is Quenya. Its meaning is not glossed, but as Paul Strack explains, it probably means "Ship Lover" and is probably a compound of cirya ("ship") and the suffix -(n)dil ("lover", "friend").[5]
