The Dwarves of Khazad-dûm were the Dwarves of Durin's Folk who mined and worked mithril for long ages in the halls of Khazad-dûm, and who had the friendship of the Elves of Eregion during the Second Age.

History

First Age

Khazad-dûm is the oldest and most famous of the Kingdoms of the Dwarves. It was the home of Durin, the first of the Dwarf Fathers. He began to work on the mansions after finding caves in the Misty Mountains. The Dwarves of Khazad-dûm were prosperous for many years. The Dwarf kingdom became larger, and the dwarves discovered mithril.

Second Age

In the second age, the Dwarves also had peace and friendship with the Elves of Eregion, also known as Hollin. When the reign of Sauron began, the Dwarves retreated into Khazad-dûm, avoiding the conflict and destruction of war. During this age, Khazad-dûm was renamed Moria.

Third Age

In the third age, the Dwarves were driven from Moria by a Balrog known as Durin's Bane, who they had awoken by digging too deep into Mount Barazinbar. The treasures of Moria were taken by Orcs, and both Trolls, Orcs, and the Balrog walked among the endless shafts and corridors for many years to come. It was not until the arrival of the Fellowship of the Ring that the Balrog was killed by Gandalf and Moria was freed from its evil prescence.

Etymology

Khazad-dûm means "the halls of the Dwarf-lords", khazad meaning "dwarf-lords" and dûm meaning "halls" while Moria means "dark abyss" or "chasm".
