History
Fortinbras was the son of Isumbras IV.[1] He married Lalia Clayhanger in S.R. 1314, and had one son, Ferumbras III, born two years later.[2]
Fortinbras became Thain after his father's death in S.R. 1339.[1] It was during his rule when his distant kinsman, Bilbo Baggins, left for his famous adventure.
He was Thain for 41 years, and after his death in S.R. at the age of 102 he was succeeded as Thain by his son Ferumbras; however, in accordance with Took tradition, Lalia continued to be head of the family until her death in S.R. 1402.[2]
Etymology
Fortinbras is the name of two characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet. It is French for "strong in arms".[3]
