Forum:Chat page

Tolkien Gateway > Forums > Chat page

What's up with that? I mean, All. The. Sites. Are. Closed. It makes no sense to have a chat page where no chat pages are available. We need to redo it, or fix it. I looked at the talk page, and saw it had broken down previously, in 2011, and was fixed but nothing has taken place since then. To encourage new members to speak out, we need something like that, where you can just post a small comment instead of some big huge forum. I am an extremely outgoing person (not to mention loud), but some people need a little bit of a push to get there. Asides from being a good place for new members, we could have discussions that go back and forth between everyone, which, asides from being amazingly fun (yes, I used a three letter word in a very important forum, shame me later) it is also a way to sharpen our arguing, listening, persuading, and compromising skills. Can't we fix this?!? Arya 19:29, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Arya! We really appreciate your feedback and contributions. I definitely agree that the IRC server was an ideal medium for certain types of discussions for the exact reasons that you mention. Over the last 10 years we had quite a few lively discussions and events on our IRC server, but we noticed a lack of interest over the last few years. Unfortunately I would see many newcomers post a question and then promptly leave before others had a chance to respond. Tolkien Gateway members span time zones all around the world so it can be difficult to have live conversation; the Forum on our wiki gives everyone a chance to respond at a time that is convenient for them. While we are eliminating our IRC server as a feature at this point in time, we definitely may offer live events on another medium in the future should there be enough interest. We will be updating the documentation on our wiki to reflect this change in the near future. Thanks again for your feedback and have a great day! --Hyarion 23:11, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Live Events!! Total interest here. If u need any help (or more likely, get tired of doing any repeated work) I'm all free. If it helps any, now is midnight at my timezone Arya 06:37, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

It's a pity that there doesn't seem to be as many bookish people (as opposed to gamers) nowadays, as if I understood correctly, readers are more or less the site's focus. I'm also curious of the format, should there be any live events. Wisenoob 02:24, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Would it hurt to do some sort of interactive stuff, or is that too much coding... I'm thinking along the lines of a map of Arda, where if u click on a city, you can see info on it, battles, leaders, so on? Is this a possibility?? Arya 03:27, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
