Something's bothered me for decades now. Why doesn't Sauron walk the path and get all chatty with the army of the dead? Seems to me he's lounging about as a spirit, they're spirits. Why doesn't he just make friends and just unleash them on all the world, kill everybody he targets so he can do what he wants?

Sauron and the army of the dead

Something's bothered me for decades now. Why doesn't Sauron walk the path and get all chatty with the army of the dead? Seems to me he's lounging about as a spirit, they're spirits. Why doesn't he just make friends and just unleash them on all the world, kill everybody he targets so he can do what he wants? Unsigned comment by PirateRo (talk • contribs).

  1. They have no incentive to help him. If they kill everybody, then who could hold their oath fulfilled and release them from their punishment? Sauron can't. He's no party in the oath.
  2. Their oath was also about the defense of Gondor. If they wiped it out, they would double their punishment.
  3. They're not spirits in the same sense. Sauron was an Angelic being, and by the end of the Third Age, had a physical form again. He'd have to physically travel there. Even on a fell beast, that's risky.
  4. The Grey Company knew very little about the Oathbreakers, but were guided by Aragorn, who had some knowledge passed down to him. There's no telling Sauron knew anything beyond myths and legends. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:07, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
