I don't know if this has been discussed or even specified elsewhere, but what regional variation of English spelling should be used throughout the site? i.e. should it be American English or U.K. English, arguments could be made for either.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  13:24, 31 July 2008 (EDT)

I don't know, really. Quotations from Tolkien should of course always be in British English (are US editions "re-translated", btw? I've always wondered...), but I don't really think it's an issue. Just basic wikipedia rules? First writer / major rewriter gets dibs on the language, and other edits must be in compliance with that? I agree. Personally, I tend to use British spelling, having come to English through education at a Dutch school, which is usually focussed on Britain rather more than America, and Tolkien, Adams, Sayers, Conan Doyle, Dick Francis and the like. But when editing a few lines in a long article in American spelling, I usually conform - if I notice the difference; I might not be aware of all points of difference! And we should indeed not go edit warring over it, although I might grumble when I find an article in thoroughly mixed spelling - or regularise it to British spelling (though I nearly wrote 'regularize' there ;) ). -- Mithrennaith 21:32, 12 August 2008 (EDT)
