Tolkien Gateway > Council > What to do concerning Category:Characters

Though I don't support deleting useful content, I find that, in my effort to make categories more structured and less cluttered, I have also been depopulating Category:Characters, putting articles in relevant subcategories instead. I now wonder if this was the right thing to do. I read that the category intended to have all characters listed both in the root and in subcategories, but this makes for a very large and cluttered category. Should it be so-populated anyway? Another possibility is to set up a parallel page called List of characters or something, or to break the category into Character subcategories. Either way, I simply was not prepared to deal with such a monolithic category, and I'm still not, and I fear I may have damaged it. - Gilgamesh 15:15, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

I think it's a good idea to break it up, but shouldn't the sub-categories be different, such as organized by book, race, or dominion? --Breragor (TalkContribsEdits) 18:29, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

They already are subcategorized in different ways. Many of them already were before I got here, and I've been seeing to that they're well-organized. For example, go to Category:Edain or Category:Noldor, browse recursively through the subcategories, and let your head start spinning. ^_^ - Gilgamesh 18:32, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, now I see what you mean. It's like Wikipedia, you can click one link and then never visit the same page twice. Those categories should be simplified or changed entirely. --Breragor (TalkContribsEdits) 19:33, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
