Gwindor was the son of Guilin and a Prince of Nargothrond. He is credited with beginning the Nírnaeth Arnoediad ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears") when, at the sight of his brother Gelmir's mangled corpse, he charged the hosts of Morgoth on the plains of Anfauglith. It is said that Morgoth trembled before his ire as he approached, but he was captured and taken inside Angband before he could destroy the dark lord.

He escaped after fourteen years, and later freed Túrin Turambar and brought him to Nargothrond. He counselled against Túrin's policy of open warfare upon Morgoth's forces, but was ignored. He was slain in the Battle of Tumhalad.
