Haerast, the Far Shore, referred to the north-eastern coast of Aman (specifically Araman) as seen from Nevrast across the Belegaer. Haerast was the opposite of Nevrast, the Hither Shore of Beleriand.[1]

Etymology

Haerast is a Sindarin name.[2] The meaning "Far Shore"[note 1] is its translation[3] analyzed as *hae "far" + *rast "shore".[4]

These words have not been attested in canon by themselves, but can be deduced etymologically. Hae represents root KHAYA, also seen in words na-chaered,[5] haeron,[6] cf. also Q. háya "far"[7]). While rast is seen in the names Andrast, Nevrast, cf. also Q. hresta "shore, beach".[8]

Notes

  1. The name is given from the point of view of a Sindarin speaker, situated in Beleriand, and obviously it is not a native Amanian/Valinorean name.
