Halfred Greenhand was the son of Holman the greenhanded.

History[edit | edit source]

Halfred was a gardener like his father, and the first to use his father's nickname as a family name. He had one son, whom he named after his father: Holman was born in S.R. 1292.[1]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name comes from Old English healfrēad "half-red, reddish" or from healfrǣd "half counsel".[2]
