The band have been inspired by the fictional worlds of [[J.R.R. Tolkien]], for example their 1990 song Lord of the Rings tells the story of [[Frodo]]. There were negotiations with the band to do soundtrack work for [[The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy]] but this fell through. Most importantly, their 1998 album [[Nightfall in Middle-Earth]] is based on [[The Silmarillion]].

Hans Jürgen Kürsch, better known as Hansi Kürsch (born August 10, 1966 in Lank-Latum, Germany) is a German musician, the lead vocalist and lyricist of the Tolkien-inspired power metal band Blind Guardian. Together with André Olbrich, he is also the principal songwriter for the band.
