"Lake Helevorn" by Peter Xavier Price

Helevorn was the deep, mountain-shaded lake[1] in northern Thargelion at the foot of Mount Rerir. A stream flowed from its southwest corner into the Greater Gelion.[2]

After the return of the Noldor to Middle-earth the people of Caranthir dwelt about the lake.[3] Its waters were defiled by Orcs during the Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame").[4] It was destroyed in the War of Wrath along with Mount Rerir, though it partially survived.

Etymology

Helevorn means "Black Glass" in Sindarin.[5] It was probably translated from an earlier Khuzdul name such as "Narag-zâram".[6]
