He married Ann Madeline (Magdalen) Matthews in 1928.

Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien was J.R.R. Tolkien's younger brother and son of Arthur Tolkien and Mabel Suffield. He was born on February 17, 1894 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

As a very young man, Hilary became involved in agriculture.
