Aldarion built Hirilondë 'Haven-finder' in Númenor. He sailed with it to Middle-earth in 877 SA and returned after three years' journey.

When Hirilondë was built in the shipyards of Rómenna, people wondered at its great size and called it Turuphanto 'Wooden Whale'.

Númenoreans had a custom that when one of their ships set sail over the sea, a woman, usually a relative to the captain, placed a bough of oiolairë tree as the Green Bough of Return, but Erendis, Aldarion's wife, refused either set the bough or send one.

When Tar-Aldarion, now King of Númenor after his father Tar-Meneldur, returned to Middle-earth with Hirilondë in 883 (or 884) SA, on the prow of the ship was set an image of an eagle with golden beak and jewelled eyes, given to him by Círdan, apparently during his previous journey to the Grey Havens.
