Jackanory was a children's television program on the BBC. The series featured an series of episodes dedicated to The Hobbit which aired from January 15, 1979 to an undetermined date the same year. The story was adapted by Roger Singleton-Turner, and narrated by Maurice Denham, Jan Francis, David Wood and Bernard Cribbins. The episodes were named after chapters in The Hobbit:
- An Unexpected Party
- Over Hill and Under Hill
- Riddles in the Dark
- Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire
- Flies and Spiders
- Barrels Out of Bond
- Inside Information
- Fire and Water
- The Clouds Burst
- The Last Stage
Due to a copyright battle with the Tolkien Estate, this adaptation was never released on VHS.
