John Benjamin Tolkien (27 March 1807 - 1 August 1896[1]) was J.R.R. Tolkien's grandfather, being Arthur Tolkien's father. He was born in Middlesex, London. He was a piano maker, teacher, and tuner.

His first wife was Jane Holmwood, with whom he had had four children: Emily (1838), Lousia (1840), John Benjamin (1845), and Jane, (1846).

Later he married Mary Jane Stow on February 16th, 1856 in All Saints Parish Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England and they had their first child, Arthur, the next year.

On the death of Arthur in 1896, John was very grieved and died six months later in Kings Norton, Warwickshire, England.
