John Benjamin Tolkien (1807-1896) was J.R.R. Tolkien's grandfather, being Arthur Tolkien's father. He was born in Middlesex, London, England and died in Kings Norton, Warwickshire, England. He was married to Mary Jane Stow and his occupation was that of a piano maker, teacher, and tuner. John married Mary Jane on February 16th, 1856 in All Saints Parish Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England and they had their first child, Arthur, the next year. This was not his first marriage however and he had been married to Jane Holmwood prior with whom he had had four children: Emily (1838), Lousia (1840), John Benjamin (1845), and Jane, (1846). John was so grieved by the death of his son, Arthur, and died six months later.
