The name Lórien refers to more than one character, item or concept. For a list of other meanings, see Lórien (disambiguation).

Lórien (Q, pron. [ˈloːri.en]) was a place in Valinor and home of the Vala Irmo and Este. Due to his close association with the gardens, Irmo is more commonly referred to as "Lórien".

Lórien is the most beautiful place in all Arda, with silver willows, flowers and lakes. One of those lakes must also be Lórellin.[1]

It is inhabited by singing nightingales[2] and many spirits. The Eldar, Maiar and even the Valar visit the gardens of Lórien to rest and freshen in its fountains[3]. Tilion used to dream by the pools of Este[4] and Melian used to sing there when the lights of the Two Trees mingled[5].

After giving birth to Feanor, Míriel was sent to Lórien by Manwe where she lay to die and for a time Finwe came beside to her body.[6]

Etymology

The name of the place apparently contains the element lor- related to "slumber" and "dream".[7]
