Lalaith (First Age late 400s), born Urwen1, was the second child of Húrin and Morwen, sister of Túrin Turambar and Nienor Níniel. She was a happy child and her parents gave her the nickname "Laughter" (Lalaith), from the nearby river, Nen Lalaith. She was three years old when she died of a plague sent out from Angband. Her death was especially hard on her older brother Túrin.
Etymology
Lalaith comes from the Sindarin word lalaith, meaning "laughter". Her birth name, Urwen, means "Fire Maiden" (from ûr = "fire, hot" and gwenn = "maiden"). Alternatively, Urwen could mean "Maiden of August", an assimilation of Urui, meaning "August", but we do not know in which month she was born.
Notes
- Her birth name was given in Narn i Chîn Húrin, a story from Unfinished Tales, and is not included in the published The Silmarillion.
