Letter 203 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Herbert Schiro had written a letter asking about allegory in The Lord of the Rings, apparently coming up with such comparisons as "five wizards = five senses", and "Orcs are Communists". Tolkien angrily dismissed this, and noted that though his tales were not allegorical, there was a certain applicability to them; individual aspects of several races - be it pride, sloth or greed - were still present in Man today.

- In the first edition, the note to the letter on page 447 mistakenly says that the text is taken from Mallorn 10, page 19, when it was actually taken from Mythlore 10, page 19.[1] This was a slip of the pen on behalf of Douglas A. Anderson,[2] who was helping Humphrey Carpenter in the process of finding letters in the United States.[3] The error was noticed shortly after publication but only corrected in 2023 for the revised and expanded edition.[4]
