DateNovember 17, 1957
Subject(s)Allegory, Symbolism

Letter 203 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Herbert Schiro had written a letter asking about the allegory in The Lord of the Rings, apparently coming up with such comparisons as "five wizards = five senses", and "Orcs are Communists". Tolkien angrily dismisses this, and notes that though his tales are not allegorical, there is a certain applicability to them; individual aspects of several races - be it pride, sloth or greed - are still present in Man today.
