This letter, dated [[February 4]], [[1938]], was addressed to C.A. Furth of [[Allen and Unwin|Allen & Unwin]]. Tolkien enclosed the first version of ''[[A Long-expected Party]]'', the first chapter of the "[[The Lord of the Rings|sequel]]" to ''[[The Hobbit]]''. He also mentions receiving a letter by a boy from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston%2C_Lincolnshire Boston, Lincs], with a list of ''errata'' (mistakes). [[Christopher Tolkien|Christopher]], who was in bed with a bad heart, was offered two pennies for every mistake he managed to find on top of that list. Tolkien encloses both the lists, in the hope that they may be required one day.

Letter 22 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary

In this letter, Tolkien enclosed a copy of A Long-expected Party, the first chapter of the The Lord of the Rings (presumably for review by Rayner Unwin).

He also mentioned receiving a letter from a young reader with a list of errata found in The Hobbit. Subsequently he had tasked his youngest son Christopher, who was confined to bed at the time with a heart condition, with finding more, paying him twopence per mistake.[note 1] Tolkien enclosed both the lists, in the hope that they might one day be required.
