Subject(s)Dealing with fan telephone calls

Letter 287 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Joy Hill had suggested that Tolkien remove his telephone number from the directory. Tolkien thanked her and said he would consider it. Removal seemed better than W.H. Lewis's method in protecting his brother,[note 1] which was to repeatedly answer "Oxford Sewage Disposal Unit" until the caller went away.
