On 3 January 1913, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Edith Bratt.[1]

  • Subject: Tolkien, who commenced the letter at midnight,[note 1] declares that his love for Edith has not changed in the last three years since they were separated and that he is willing to marry her.

Notes

  1. Tolkien turned 21 years old on 3 January 1913, and was therefore free to again contact Edith, from whom he had been separated by his custodian Father Francis Xavier Morgan.
