Jane T. Sibley 30 May 1964 is a letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to a reader, miss Jane T. Sibley of Haddam, Connecticut written on May 30th, 1964. It informs the reader that the runes in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are not the same set. Typed on Tolkien's own, preprinted paper (selfadressed to 76 Sandfield Road. Signed and accompanied by a handwritten note suggesting further reading. Copyright by the Tolkien Trust.

  • Publication: The letter was first printed in an article by Jane T. Sibley in Niekas 38, 1989 (pp. 13, 67). A revised version of the material was published in Vinyar Tengwar 6 (July 1989): a photocopy reproduction of the letter is featured on the back, and commentaries and a transcription (by Sibley) are given on pages 7-8.
