On 10 January 1964, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to the Royal Society of Literature.[1]

  • Subject: Tolkien declines to write an obituary of C.S. Lewis for the Society's journal Report, but suggests that Owen Barfield do so instead. Tolkien writes: "I feel his loss so deeply that I have since his death refused to write or speak about him".[1]
  • Publication: A quote from the letter appeared in the article "Literary Greats Exposed as Gossips and Snipes" by Martin Bentham, published in the Sunday Telegraph, 7 February 1999.[1]
