Matěj Čadil is a Czech artist and graphic designer who lives with his family in Prague, Czech Republic. He created numerous illustrations inspired by Tolkien's legendarium, he mostly explores locations or characters which are not very well known or often illustrated.
His love of Middle-earth began when his father introduced him to Tolkien's books at a young age, sparking his passion for creating illustrations inspired by the rich descriptions found in Tolkien's writings.[1]
He is the creator of a website Angrenost.cz (in Czech) dedicated to Tolkien's works that has been active since 2001 and he has been making Tolkien-inspired art since that time (at first to illustrate the website).[2]
His illustration "The Curious Fox" was shortlisted for Best Artwork in Tolkien Society Awards 2022.[3] Again, two years later, his artwork "The Road Goes Ever On" was shortlisted for the Tolkien Society Awards 2024.[4]
His art has been featured in Beyond Bree calendars since 2023.[5]
In a 2023 interview for "Dragón Verde," a magazine of Sociedad Tolkien Colombia Orodruin, he shared insights into his personal life, mentioning his love for his hometown of Prague and his affinity for history, architecture, and cartography as well as nature, particularly the forests and mountains. He mentioned that one of his favourite Tolkien characters is Bilbo, reflecting his personal connection to the character's adventurous and homely sides. Matěj expressed his openness to future projects related to Tolkien's world and his desire to illustrate books or collaborate on projects related to the beloved author's works.[1]
