Max Schuchart, MBE (August 16, 1920 - February 25, 2005) was a Dutch poet, journalist and translator. He translated many other English authors, such as Oscar Wilde, Terry Goodkind, Richard Adams, Lord Dunsany, William Horwood, Daniel Defoe and Salman Rushdie.

"In de Ban van de Ring"[edit | edit source]

Schuchart was the first to translate The Lord of the Rings (in 1956-1957), and the third to translate The Hobbit. He was also the first to translate Bilbo's Last Song and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. He wrote a short booklet called Tolkien: In de Ban van zijn Werk, about Tolkien, his works, his visit to The Netherlands in 1958 and his involvement with the Dutch translation of The Lord of the Rings.

Schuchart revised his translation three times, in 1980 (incorporating changes made to the Second Edition of the original and with the Appendices as a separate volume, including C, the complete text of D, E and F I for the first time), in 1996 (this was published the subsequent year) and in 2003 (including Appendix F II for the first time).
