Max Schuchart, MBE (August 16, 1920 - February 25, 2005) was a Dutch poet, journalist and translator. He translated many other English authors, such as Oscar Wilde, Daniel Defoe and Salman Rushdie. Schuchart was the first to translate The Lord of the Rings (in 1957), and the second to translate The Hobbit. He won the Martinus Nijhoff award, an award for translations, for In de Ban van de Ring, as his translation was called.

Schuchart revised his translation in 1996, and this was published the subsequent year.
