All of these refer to the same idea, an online enviroment where a multitude of people may be logged on and interact with one another. The original defintion for MUD was ''multi-user dungeon'', indicating the multiplayer aspect applied to popular single player games like Dungeon and Zork. While not always the case, the vast majority of MUDs are builting for the sole purpose of gaming. MUDs can be considered the predecessors of the MMORPG. Many, many Tolkien based MUDs have existed and still exist today, offering a large range of options to choose from. Listed below are MUDs based upon the works of J.R.R. Tolkien:

In the 80's and 90's, a variety of Multi-User computer based games came out, either by professional companies or individual programmers. Though outdated in design, many are still active. The games involved multiple users logging in and interacting with each other; in many ways they were the precursors of modern MMPORGs like The Lord of the Rings Online.

There have been several types of Multi-User games:

  • MUD: Multi-User Dungeon
  • MUSH: Multi-User Shared Hack
  • MUX: Multi-User Experience
