The Orange Free State, now part of the Republic of South Africa, is the country in which J.R.R. Tolkien was born. He lived there from his birth in 1892 until April 1895. In 1944, Christopher Tolkien spent time there in a training camp of the Royal Air Force, during which he sent many letters to his father, and his father many to him. The main subjects in these letters were places of nostalgia, and chapters of The Lord of the Rings.
