I'm just trying to make the verbiage consistent. the last item about going on raids needs its own verb to be part of the list, or there should not be a comma after homes. i agree they didn't "have to" go to war or on raids. i'd used the word "marched" because that's the word in the text, but you're correct in this sentence that implied they "had to" march. how's this? undo

They had to look for new homes when they were driven out from their homes. The past tense is fine for the rest and went does not need to be replaced with marched and does not need to be repeated. Darthbombadil rephrased the passage to say something that the chapter does not say undo
