On 25 January 1973, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Patrick Hunt.[1]

  • Comments: Mr. Hunt, who had written to Tolkien, was at this time in prison. The daughter of Mr. Hunt recalls that this letter and photograph were Mr. Hunt's prized possessions and that he later was to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to his daughter (and her siblings).[1]

Jan. 25th 1973

Dear Mr Hunt,
Thank you very much for your kind letter; it is most encouraging (to an author) to learn that his books have given pleasure and encouragement.
I have had v. dark days of my own in my time, and I do hope that yours will soon now be over.
