He had previously played Richard Sharpe in TV dramatisations of Bernard Cornwell's series of novels about the Napoleonic Wars. It is thought that his comment ("Still Sharp!") on inspecting the shards of Narsil in the [[Fellowship of the Ring]] film is a sly nod to that role.
