Enemies of Fate
I'm imagining "Cothi Amarthan" may be close.
What do you think?
If you have ponderings on this, please let me know!

The word for 'enemy' is cotumo (pl. cotumor).
'Amarth" is a Sindarin word. There are a number of words for 'fate' in Q, but I would prefer to use 'ambar' (a form of 'umbar', cf. Turambar, ambartanen). "of" is usually translated with the suffix "-ion". So,

Cotumor Ambarion

The comic magazine Duga (Bulgarian: Дъга, pronounced IPA: [dɤga]) was a Bulgarian periodical, which produced adaptations by various foreign authors, including Stevenson’s Treasure Island and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and the first part of The Lord of the Rings (issues 25 to 42), among others. The first issue of the magazine was launched in 1979.

The Series
The author and illustrator of the first series, called Bilbo Baggins or There and Back Again (Bulgarian: Билбо Бегинс или Дотам и обратно, pronounced IPA: [bilbo bɛgins ili dotam i obratno]), was Sotir Gelev, a well known Bulgarian artist and movie director.

The Lord of the Rings (Bulgarian: Господарят на пръстените, pronounced IPA: [gospodarjət na prɤstenite]) was written by Kancho Kozhuharov and illustrated by Sotir Gelev. Unfortunately, the series ended with the Breaking of the Fellowship after the magazine seized to exist in 1992 with the democratic changes in Bulgaria.

Copyright issues
The comic series were never authorized by the Tolkien Estate as the magazine had seized to exist by the time democratic changes were brought about in Bulgaria. Nowadays, copies of the comic magazine are extremely hard to find even on the market for collector’s items.
Adanedhelhttps://tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=File:Duga.jpg&diff=42315File:Duga.jpg2007-04-19T23:18:07Z
Adanedhel:

The Dwarves, or Khazâd, were beings of short stature, often friendly with Hobbits although long suspicious of Elves. They were typically blacksmiths and stoneworkers by profession, unrivaled in some of their arts even by the Elves.

History
Main Article: History of the Dwarves

Unlike Elves and Men, the Dwarves are not counted among the Children of Ilúvatar. They were created by Aulë the Smith. They were kept asleep until the creation of the Elves. Aulë created the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, from whom all other Dwarves are descended. Aulë's work was doomed, though, because he did not have the power to grant independent life to his creations - that power belonged to Ilúvatar alone. Aulë later repented and confessed to Ilúvatar. When the Dwarves were completed, though, the voice of Ilúvatar spoke to Aulë and agreed to grant them true life, and include them in His plan for Arda. Ilúvatar granted the Dwarves life, and therefore they are known as the Adopted Children of Ilúvatar.

They mined and worked precious metals throughout the mountains of Middle-earth. In many ways, they were in between the Elves and Men. They were not immortal, but lived to two hundred and fifty years or more. They were generally less corruptible than Men, but committed their share of rash and greedy acts. (Among these are the slaying of Elu Thingol and the dispute over the Nauglamír, which first brought suspicion and hate between Elves and Dwarves)

The Dwarven language was created by Aulë, and was known as Khuzdul. It was a strange language to Elves and Men, and few non-Dwarves learned it, also because they kept it secret. However, one Dwarven phrase is well known: the ancient battle cry, going back to at least the First Age: "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!", which means "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!"

The Dwarves were known for their strength and endurance in battle, as well as their fury, especially when revenging their kin, and being some of the greatest warriors in all of Middle-earth. They fought in many wars and battles over the ages of Middle-earth's existance, among which were:

* The First Battle of Beleriand.
* The Battle of Unnumbered Tears.
* The Sack of Doriath.
* The Battle of Sarn Athrad.
* The War of the Last Alliance.
* The War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
* The Battle of Five Armies.
* The War of the Ring.

Clans of the Dwarves
Most Dwarves mentioned in Tolkien's works are of Durin's folk, the clan founded by Durin I of Khazad-dûm, called the Longbeards. (A notable exception are the inhabitants of the dwarf-cities of Nogrod and Belegost in the Blue Mountains, spoken of in The Silmarillion). The seven different groups of Dwarf-folk originated in the locations where the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves first awoke before the First Age. There were three pairs of Dwarf Fathers that awoke together, and their Folk would build their halls near each other, though Durin himself had awoken alone. (In his letters, Tolkien adds that all the Dwarf Fathers except for Durin also had wives who awoke with them). Therefore the halls of the Longbeards at Khazad-dûm were not located near the halls of another Dwarf-kingdom. The seven clans of the Dwarves were:

* Longbeards, Durin's Folk, originally from Khazad-dûm.
* Firebeards, originally from Nogrod. Paired with the
* Broadbeams, originally from Belegost.
* Ironfists, originated in the Orocarni in the far East. They were paired with the
* Stiffbeards.
* Blacklocks, originated in the Orocarni. They were paired with the
* Stonefoots.

There was also an eighth group of Dwarves that was not a separate member from these seven kindreds, but composed of exiles from each: the Petty-dwarves, who were hunted like animals to the point of extinction by the Elves in the First Age.

Dwarf-women
: Main article: Dwarf-women
Dwarf-women made up only about a third of the total population. They seldom walked abroad, and that too only in great need. Dwarf-women are also so alike in voice and appearance, and garb when they must travel, that it is hard to tell them apart from Dwarf-men. It is because of the fewness of women that the Dwarf population increases slowly. Dwarves only take one husband or wife in their lifetime, and are jealous, as in all matters of their rights. The number of Dwarf-men that marry is actually less than a third, and not all the women take husbands either; some desire none, some want one they cannot have, and some will have no other one. There are also many men that don't want a wife, because they are obsessed with their crafts.

Dwarf-characters in The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit
Thorin Oakenshield brought twelve Dwarves to Bag End to recruit Bilbo for their treasure hunt in The Hobbit. The Twelve Dwarves were:

*Dori, Nori, and Ori.
*Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.
*Oin, and Glóin.
*Balin, and Dwalin.
*Fili, and Kili.

Dain II Ironfoot, lead more than five-hundred heavily armed Dwarves, to the Lonely Mountain to aid Thorin Oakenshield, and ended up participating in the Battle of Five Armies. He would later become King Under the Mountain.

Gimli son of Glóin joined the Fellowship of the Ring and befriended Legolas of Mirkwood in The Lord of the Rings.

Names
The Dwarves called themselves the Khazâd, the name Aulë gave them; this translates as the Hadhodrim in Sindarin, and the Casari in Quenya. Casari was the common word for Dwarves among the Noldor, but the Sindar usually called them the Naugrim or Nogothrim, the Stunted People.

Almost all the names of the dwarves of Middle-earth are taken from the Icelandic saga of Völuspá.

According to Tolkien, the "real 'historical'" plural of dwarf is dwarrows or dwerrows. He once referred to dwarves as "a piece of private bad grammar" (Letters, 17), but in Appendix F to The Lord of the Rings he explains that if we still spoke of dwarves regularly, English might have retained a special plural for the word dwarf as with man. The form dwarrow only appears in the word Dwarrowdelf, a name for Moria. Tolkien used Dwarves, instead, which corresponds with Elf and Elves, making its meaning more apparent. The use of a different term also serves to set Tolkien's Dwarves apart from the similarly-named creatures in mythology and fairy-tales.

The enduring popularity of Tolkien's books, especially The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, has led to the popular use of the term dwarves to describe this race in fantasy literature. Before Tolkien, the term dwarfs (with a different spelling) was used, as seen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In fact, the latter spelling was so common that the original editor of The Lord of the Rings "corrected" Tolkien's dwarves to dwarfs (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, 138).

Other versions
In the earliest versions of Tolkien's Middle-earth mythology (see: The History of Middle-earth) the dwarves were evil beings created by Melkor.

Below is a list of Projects were are currently working on. Feel free to add a sub-bullet with your username if you are currently working on one.

* Look into the possibility of publishing a book with our content
* Migrate TolkienNews.net to the wiki.
* Finish the new Main Page
* Chapter by Chapter synopsis/analysis of The Children of Hurin
* Add more essays.
* Create a FAQ namespace for FAQs such as FAQ:Balrogs.
* Create a bot which goes through any Tolkien-related site and saves a cached version, similar to archive.org. This way Tolkien content can be preserved.
* Create a PHP script which scrapes forums, newsgroups, wikis, news sites, and various other places that are related to Tolkien so essentially a Tolkien fan can view anything in the Tolkien community that is being updated.
* Create an extension to embed video. (Trying to dynamically convert avi/mov/wmv/etc to .flv and output as .swf is a pain)
* Design a new custom skin, Monobook is getting boring.
* Create a Middle-earth map engine equivalent to Google Earth.
* Integrate java clients into the wiki
* Surpass 18,000 images which should give us the largest collection of images.
* Add links on the left menu which dynamically translate the content to the specified language.
* Possibly look into having non-canon articles use a different skin
* Add an extension which allows embedding of video/audio (not yet released unfortunately)
* Reach 8,000 articles to be listed on the List of largest wikis
* Upload images of every single LotR TCG card.
* Upgrade to this forum extension.
* Install LaTeX, TengTex, and WikiTex so we can do this
* Write a screenplay which transforms The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit (or any other Tolkien story) into a present day scenario. Similar to what O Brother, Where Art Thou? did for The Odyssey.
* Add Elvish names to their own articles?
* Finish uploading Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings images.
* Create an article which details locations in New Zealand from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. Something a visitor could print out and take with them while visiting the country that could serve as a guide.
* Create an article which details Tolkien-related locations around Oxford and nearby areas one could tour.
* Fix MediaWiki:Popups.js.
* Have a contest for who can create the best Tolkien-themed song.
* Convince Weird Al to do a Lord of the Rings parody. (This is more of a reminder to check for a response as I just sent an email to him)
* Scene by scene summary of The Lord of the Rings.
* Scene by scene analysis of PJ's films, Bakshi's film, and Rankin/Bass films, as well as the books.
* Go through all the Lord of the Rings news websites and gather any news of events and put them into articles.
* Create a geographical navigation system. For instance Harondor would have a compass, a visitor could click the North symbol to be directed to Lebennin, they could click the West symbol to be directed to Bay of Belfalas, etc. The system would have tiers. You could navigate continents such as Middle-earth, Numenor, etc. then there would be a level of navigation for major regions like Gondor and Eriador, then another level for cities.
* A Fellowship of the Ring route which allows one to follow the region articles linearlly just as the Fellowship of the Ring did.

My name is Kaloyan Ivanov and I am from Bulgaria. I work as a translator and I teach at a local university.

I have written a number of articles on Tolkien's life and legendarium (in Bulgarian), but I am mostly interested in his invented languages.

I have most of the published works by Tolkien and a number of books and articles on him.

I created a Bulgarian site about Tolkien (Endorion) with information about Tolkien, his works, the movies by Peter Jackson, and translations of "The Encyclopedia of Arda" (well, most of it anyway) and "Ardalambion".

I have also translated various poems and excerpts of Tolkien's works in Bulgarian.
Adanedhelhttps://tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=Talk:Tolkien_Google_logo_petition&diff=42262Talk:Tolkien Google logo petition2007-04-18T22:52:17Z
Adanedhel: Note on Tengwar

Beren's The One Ring Logo
So far I really like Beren's design. It's simple, to the point, and well implemented. I can easily see something like it on Google's homepage. I was looking forever trying to find an image of the One Ring but in my head I kept looking for the exact circular shape which makes it impossible to see the inscription , the tilted idea is brilliant. --Hyarion 18:05, 4 May 2006 (EDT)

Question…
Before I sign up, I'd like to know if anyone has consulted with the Dark Tower (TE). Can Google ever act on this if it's considered copyright infringement? Don't get me wrong - I think it's a great idea - if it's possible.

:I understand your concerns. TE is pretty picky but I believe it constitutes fair use as there is no money involved at all and its not hurting their image. Worst case scenario is Google asks us to take down the images, but in that case they have already seen the petition and a chance of their logo designer hearing about it is pretty good. --Hyarion 00:03, 5 May 2006 (EDT)

Is this really a suitable place for a petition?
The petition is hard to get to and the act of signing it is even more confusing, especially if you have never used a wiki before. Wouldn't it be better if you set up a petition on one of those free petition-specialised sites? I think that would get it better coverage. Also, using fake names won't do any good for the petition, I'm affraid.

P.S. I apologise for not being registered yet, I'm posting this in a hurry. - Denis Kasak

:Denis, the petition is already for some weeks the Featured Article on the Main Page, so it's not really hard to find, IMHO. And adding a name to the petition isn't that hard, either, if you'd ask me.
:The 'fake names' you object to are socalled screen names, which are widely used (as you might know) on on-line discussion/message boards. --Earendilyon 05:05, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

::I know what screen names are, which is precisely why I mentioned it :) Maybe I've given off a wrong impression in my first post. What I meant to say was that using real first and last names could probably add quite a bit of credibility and weight to each of the signatures, not to mention the seriousness of the petition as a whole. -- Denis Kasak

:Hello Denis. As Earendilyon mentioned the petition has been on the main page for weeks, and is present on numerous news sites. If one still cannot find it you can simply search for "Google" at the left search box and click the first link. I do agree with you that signing may be difficult for people not familiar with wikis. I've added a bit of text which informs the visitor to click Edit on the right, as well as to not worry about the alphabetical part. I hope this helps and thanks for your input. --Hyarion 09:09, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

::It was probably a bit of an overstatement to say that the petition is hard to find. Concerning my other point, I was merely expressing worry that some people may find the complications of a wiki (with which they may not be familiar) to outweigh the benefit this petition may bring. I would not want to lose such people due to the system because I'd like this petition to be heard just as much as you :) I hope I am wrong and this won't stop people from signing. Still, kudos to you Hyaron; the text you added is a great improvement. Well, I'm off to registering and signing. -- Denis Kasak

:::Denis, concerning your point on screen names: that's how the Internet (often) works; people are more known by their screen names than by their RL names. Google is part of the 'net, so they should know that and accept that (IMHO). If not: boo to Google! --Earendilyon 15:34, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

::::Agreed, screen names are indeed what most people use when online. They are, however, not used exclusively as a method of personal identification on the 'net. My stance on this matter is probably biased towards what the programming community on Usenet and similar media would consider polite and appropriate, since I am myself a programmer. On a more objective note, what concerned me is that Google might decide that screen names, as there are many duplicates and it is more difficult to decide whether it is a genuine name, are an invalid method of proving the number of people that actually signed the petition. Still, I am probably delving into the matter much more than necessary. I'm sure Google, as a respected Internet based firm, will be reasonable on the matter. After all, it is not too much of a problem on their side to make something like this come true. I must say I'm looking forward to 3rd of January! Oh, one more thing. How will the logo be chosen? Will Google decide on which logo to use if they accept our proposition? Denis Kasak 16:17, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

:::::Hello Denis, I definitely agree, for a formal petition real names possibly with a unique IP would definitely be more sufficient. To be honest however, when I came up with the idea it was more for just a bit of fun in seeing a Tolkien-Google logo, not that we as the Tolkien community were outraged by the fact that there had not yet been a Tolkien logo and that we should force Google to do so, it is all just for fun. That being said the petition has certainly generated more interest than expected and I definitely think we should give Google an email in a couple months just as a friendly reminder that a Tolkien logo would be cool. I doubt they would "choose" a logo or even respond to the email as they probably get this sort of thing a lot. But there's always the small chance they would take notice and follow through, and the more signatures, however unformal they may be, the higher possibility. Thanks for your input! --Hyarion 17:51, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

:It may help to put a link up or an announcement at other Tolkien sites, the lotr website in particular. I will leave this to more experienced contributors, not wanting to make a mess of anything--Quidon88 21:01, 18 July 2006 (EDT)

::Hello Quidon88, which LotR website did you have in mind? We tried all the news websites but unfortunately they all refused as they didn't like the thought of linking to a competing website :( We still have plenty of time before the big day however and maybe with such a large amount of signatures they will begin to change their mind. Don't worry you could never make a mess of anything, wikis are amazing as anything can be undone quite easily :) --Hyarion 21:39, 18 July 2006 (EDT)
Did it Work?
I looked at the Google homepage last night, shortly after toasting the Professor, and I did not see anything. Did I perhaps miss it, or were our efforts for naught? In case you are wondering, I drank the last of the chocolate milk (that was all I had left in the refrigerator) in my high school graduation mug. To the Professor!!!!--Quidon88 12:36, 4 January 2007 (EST)

::Unfortunately not, but we're already gearing towards next year; the more people who know about it the higher chance someone at Google will like the idea. --Hyarion 12:57, 9 January 2007 (EST)
Edits I have made
As the second most popular page (after the home page), this article really needed some work because, I think, it's been a very poor in quite bad condition for a while now. (It also goes towards fulfilling my commitment of 30 Improved Pages for the New Year.)

Basically I have done the following:
*Re-alphabetised the Signatures;
*Limited the Signatures to three columns rather than five so there is no longer a horizontal scrolling issue in lower resolutions;
*Re-alphabetised the Supporting Websites;
*Limited the Supporting Websites to three colomns;
*Added a few extra links and tidied a bit of the English;
*Decreased the size of the thumbnails so two fit side-by-side on 800x600 resolution.

Generally, this article was quite appalling on 800x600 (and not fantastic on 1024x768), and I've tidied it and made it nice for a generally more pleasurable experience whilst browsing this page.

I hope no one has any objections. — Mith 08:27, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Note on Tengwar
I uploaded a correct version of the tengwar logo, following the rules for writing in English mode, e.g. long carrier for the "oo" and a bottom-dot for the "e". Bilbo Baggins was the first ring-bearer in the history of Middle-earth to give up the One Ring voluntarily.

History
He was born on September 22, 2890 of the Third Age, son of Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took. In 2941, he joined Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield and his twelve Dwarves on the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. This led to an adventure which takes Bilbo and his companions to Rivendell and through Mirkwood, eventually reaching Lonely Mountain. Here, after the mountain has been reclaimed by Thorin Oakenshield, the Battle of Five Armies takes place.

During his adventures in The Hobbit, Bilbo also found the One Ring, and escaped from Gollum when he won a riddle competition with the question "What have I got in my pocket?" However, during the contest, he also revealed the names of "Baggins" and "The Shire" to Gollum. Bilbo was the Ring-bearer for many decades with no idea of its significance, and it prolonged his life beyond normal limits and slowed his aging. He used this ring to its fullest ability when the expedition was captured by spiders in Mirkwood, and also when Thorin and his companions were imprisoned by the Mirkwood Elves. At the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo uses the ring to prevent himself getting hurt. This means it is difficult to find him after the battle, but eventually he regains consciousness and takes the ring off himself. He further remarks to Frodo in The Lord of the Rings that it is useful for hiding from the Sackville-Bagginses when they come to visit.

In The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo left the Shire on the day of his eleventy-first (111th) birthday, (September 22, 3001), leaving the Ring and all the rest of his estate, including his home Bag End, to his relative and heir Frodo. He travelled to Rivendell, accompanied by three dwarves, where he lived a very pleasant life of retirement: eating, sleeping, writing poetry, and working on his memoir, There and Back Again, known to us as The Hobbit. He also wrote a book called Translations from the Elvish, which formed the basis of what is known to us as The Silmarillion.

At the end of The Return of the King, Bilbo accompanied Frodo Baggins, Gandalf, and Elves to the Grey Havens, there to take ship for Valinor across the sea, on September 29, 3021. He had already celebrated his 131st birthday, becoming the oldest Hobbit in Middle-earth.

The poem "Bilbo's Last Song" was published after Tolkien's death.
