Thrór (Third Age 2542 – 2790, lived 248 years) was King of Durin's folk for 201 years, from 2589 to 2790. He was the eldest son of Dáin I, and with his younger brother Grór he led his people away from the Grey Mountains after a great Cold-drake killed both his father and brother Frór. Thrór led some of the Dwarves back to Lonely Mountain, where he became King under the Mountain. While Grór continued west with the a great following of Durin's folk to the Iron Hills, where he founded his own realm.

History
King under the Mountain
At Erebor, Thrór and his people were very prosperous. Gaining the friendship of the Northmen who lived along the river Celduin. These people later founded the town of Dale and had much trade of goods, beautiful trinkets, and weapons with the Dwarves. The Ereborians also had much traffic of ores with their kinsman in the Iron Hills. And the region had peace and prosperity for many years.

In 2770 though their prosperity ended. The Dragon Smaug heard of the wealth of Thrór and his people. And he came south from the Ered Mithrin and sacked the Lonely Mountain, killing many Dwarves. But from the destruction many escaped last of them being Thrór and his son Thráin from the hidden Side Door. So with a small company of kin and faithful followers they made the great wandering south, until they reached the hills of Dunland.

On a Midyear's Day, Thrór created his map of the Desolation. With runes he wrote information about entering Erebor from a secret way. He used Moon-letters for this.

Dunland, and the journey to Moria
In Dunland, his people tried to make a living, but twenty years after the Sack of Erebor Thrór now old, poor, and desperate, left his people and went north with a single companion, Nár, but not before giving his son Thráin II his Ring of Power, along with the map and key to the Lonely Mountain. He said to Thráin at their parting:
"This may prove the foundation of new fortune for you yet, though it seems unlikely. It needs gold to breed gold."
"Surely you do not think of returning to Erebor?" Thráin said.
"Not at my age," Thrór said. "Our vengeance on Smaug at bequeath upon you and your sons. But I am tired of poverty and the scorn of Men. I go to see what I can find." But he did not say where.

From Dunland where he was then dwelling, he made north with Nár. Eventually they made it over the Redhorn Pass and down into Azanulbizar the Dimrill Dale. When Thrór came to the East-gate of Moria he found it open. Nár begged him to beware, but he took no heed of him, and walked through the gates as the heir who had returned. But he did not come back.

Death
Nár stayed nearby for many days in hiding. One day he heard a loud shout and the blare of a horn, and a body was flung out onto steps. Fearing that it was Thrór, he began to creep near but a voice called out from within the gate: "Come on, beardling! We can see you. But there is no need to be afraid today. We need you as a messenger." Nár approached and found that it was indeed the body of Thrór, but his head was severed and lay face downward. As he knelt there, he heard Orc-laughter from the shadows and the voice said, "If beggars will not wait at my gate but sneak in to try thieving, this is what we do to them. If any of your people poke their foul beards in here again, they will fare the same. Go and tell them so! But if his family wishes to know who is now king here, the name is written on his face. I wrote it! I killed him! I am the master!" Then Nár turned over the head and and saw branded across the brow in Dwarvish runes the name AZOG. That name was branded in his heart and the hearts of Dwarves afterwards.

Nár stooped to retrieve the head but the voice of Azog said, "Drop it! Be off! Here is your fee, beggar-beard!" A small pouch struck him, holding a few coins of little worth. Weeping, Nár took the pouch and fled down the Silverlode. When he looked back, he saw that Orcs had emerged from the gate and were hacking Thrór's body into pieces and throwing them to the crows.

Aftermath
When Nár returned to Dunland and brought with him the tale to Thráin, Thráin wept and cursed and tore his beard and he fell silent. For seven days he sat in silence without eating or sleeping. Finally on the seventh day, he stood up and said, "This cannot be borne!" This was the beginning of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. He sent messengers with tale to every corner of the world to the Seven Houses, calling upon them for vengeance. Nine years later at the Battle of Azanulbizar, the climax of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs the Thrór was avenged, and Thráin took the Azog's severed head and shoved the purse of coins into his mouth then set it on a stake.
Contrary to popular belief, Dwarf-women do indeed exist, although Dis was the only named Dwarf-woman mentioned by Tolkien. Gimli stated that only approximately one-third of their population consisted of women. Because of this, they are usually kept concealed inside their mountain halls to be protected from other races. They seldom travel in the outside world and when they do they dress as men, with similar voice and appearance as male dwarves, even when they are rarely seen they are usually mistaken for a male. Many Men believe the myth that Dwarves actually grow out of stone. The lack of Dwarf-women is also the reason for the slow increase in population of the race. Less than one-third of Dwarf-men take a wife, and those that do are bound to her for life. The other males prefer to spend their time with their crafts instead of women and even some women do not end up marrying: some desire none, some want one they cannot have, and will have no other one (the degree of choice granted to Dwarf-women about who or even if they should marry is perhaps indicative of a relatively large amount of social freedom granted to women in Dwarf society).
The Battle of Azanulbizar (2799) was the penultimate battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. It was fought beneath the East-gate of Moria in the valley of Azanulbizar, called Nanduhirion in Sindarin or Dimrill Dale in Westron. Therefore the event is also known as the Battle of Nanduhirion and the Battle of Dimrill Dale.

Prior to the Battle
The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was started when Azog the Orc-chieftain of Moria captured and mutilated Thrór, King of Durin's folk. Azog carved his own name in runes onto Thrór's severed head, and then let his companion Nár escape so that all Dwarves would know that an Orc now ruled Moria. Full of righteous fury, Thrór's son Thráin II gathered a great army of Dwarves, including those not of Durin's folk (Firebeards and Broadbeams from the Blue Mountains and those from the far East of Middle-earth). For six years they systematically destroyed the Orc-holds of the Misty Mountains, until only Moria was left where those Goblins that survived the destruction fled.

Opposing Forces
The exact number for the Dwarves was not specified, but it can be estimated at being somewhere between six to ten thousand Longbeards, Firebeards, Broadbeams, Ironfists, Stonefoots, Blacklocks, and Stiffbeards.

The Orcs, as stated above, came from Moria, and from as far north as Mount Gundabad. So their numbers can be estimated at fifteen to twenty thousand Orcs.

The Battle
The battle started on a dark day of cold winter with no sunlight. The Dwarves had marched into the Dimrill Dale where they found the great East-gate and sent up a great noise. They discovered that on the western slopes above thousands of Orcs had gathered and more were coming out of the East-gate, outnumbering them and holding the higher ground.

The first Vanguard led by King Thraín, assaulted the slopes but were driven back with casualties, into a wood near the Mirrormere, where Frerin youngest son of Thraín was slain along with Fundin, father of Balin; and many others. Thraín himself was wounded, as well as his eldest son Thorin II Oakenshield. Who's shield was broken during the battle and had to use an oak branch that he hewed off a tree to defend himself.

Elsewhere, the battle swayed back and forth until Náin from the Iron Hills, arrived with a host of fresh troops. Naín, and his Dwarves hewed through the Orc lines with their mattocks shouting AZOG! AZOG! AZOG! until they got to the steps of the gate, in-which Naín called out in a loud voice, "Azog! If you are in, come out! Or is the play in the valley to rough?" Azog then emerged from the inner gate with his guards. "What's this? Another beggar?" He said. "Must I brand you too?" Naín and his company engaged Azog and his guards in a duel. Naín was very tired and weary from battle and half blind with rage as he engaged Azog. Azog on the other hand, was fresh and full of strength for battle, having waited until the end. Naín tried to swing as hard as he could at Azog but the orc darted aside, and he missed, which splintered his mattocks on the ground. The orc kicked him in the leg when he dodged the Dwarf's blow, making him stumble, at which Azog tried to decapitate him but Azog only broke Naín's neck because of the strong mail he was wearing, Naín died instantly.

Azog laughed at this, but when he looked out into the valley he found that his entire army was routed. Those that could were fleeing southwards, and all his guards were killed as well. With that he fled back to the gate. But Náin's son, Dáin, leaped up the steps after him with his red axe and just before the gate he hewed off Azog's head, thus ending the war.
He was just 32-years old at the time, very young for a Dwarf, and it was remarked an amazing feat. Dáin would later become King under the Mountain as Dáin II Ironfoot.

Aftermath
The Dwarves were victorious, but with heavy casualties. Half of their forces dead or mortally wounded. But the Orcs casualties were ten thousand.
After the battle, King Thráin wanted to enter and reclaim Moria, the ancestral home of Durin's folk. However, since the Dwarves had taken heavy losses and the Dwarves of the other Houses did not see any benefit in it for them unless they got some treasure from Moria. More significantly, Dáin had peered beyond the East-gate after slaying Azog, and saw that Durin's Bane still lingered within and advised Thráin not to enter.

They then stripped the dead, so the orcs couldn't plunder them, and felled all the trees in the valley which they made many pyres with, and put there dead on them to burn. For they could not bury them all in fashioned tombs of stone, as was their custom for it would take many years. So those that fell in that battle were known proudly as Burned Dwarves.

The Houses then parted ways, returning to their homes to the North, East, and West.

Thráin, with what was left of Durin's folks' forces, went back to Dunland, and shortly afterwards wandered in Eriador till they settled in the Northern Blue Mountains. There Durin's folk regrew slowly in population and waited till the days they could take back the halls of Erebor, and Khazad-dum.

Repercussions
Although the Dwarves suffered heavy casualties, the battle would have lasting effects for the Orcs of the Misty Mountains. Their numbers were severely shrunken after the battle and never fully recovered. If it hadn't been for the battle, Bilbo Baggins and his thirteen Dwarf companions may have never made it to Erebor; the Battle of Five Armies wouldn't have been won by the army of Elves, Men, and Dwarves; and The Fellowship may have never got through Moria alive.
Thrór (Third Age 2542 – 2790, lived 248 years) was King of Durin's folk for 201 years, from 2589 to 2790. === Dunland, and the journey to Moria ===
Why Thrór and his people chose to settle in Dunland is not clear, but they tried to make a living. "Not at my age," Thrór said to him. "Our vengeance on Smaug I bequeath upon you and your sons. But I am tired of poverty and the scorn of Men. I go to see what I can find."
He did not say where.

Thrór left his people and went north with a single companion, an old friend Nár. Eventally they made it over the Redhorn Pass down into Azanulbizar the Dimrill Dale. And when they came to the East-gate of Moria they found it open. Nár begged Thrór to beware, but he took no heed of him, and walked through the gates as the heir who had returned. But he did not come back.

Death
Nár stayed nearby for many days in hiding until one day he heard a great shout, followed by the blast of a horn, and a body was flung out of the gate and onto the steps.

Fearing that it was Thrór, Nár crept near. He heard the sound of Orc laughter from the shadows of the gate and then a voice called out, "Come here, beardling! We can see you. But there is no need to be afraid today. We need you as a messenger." Nár found that it was indeed the body of Thrór. His head had been severed and it lay face downward.

As he knelt there, the voice called out from the gate, "If beggars will not wait at my gates but instead sneak in to try thieving, this is what we will do to them. If any of your people poke their foul beards in here again, they will fare the same. Go and tell them so. But if his family wishes to know who is king here, tell them I am king! I killed him!" Nár turned Thrór's head upright and saw branded across his brow in Dwarvish runes the name AZOG.

"Drop it!" The voice commanded when Nár moved to retrieve the head. "Here is your fee, beggar-beard! Now be off!"
Nár was struck with a small pouch of coins of little worth. Weeping, he took the pouch and fled down the Silverlode. He looked back and saw that Orcs had emerged from the Gate and were hacking Thrór's body into pieces and flinging them to the crows.

Aftermath
When Nár returned to Dunland with the tale, Thráin wept and cursed and tore his beard and then fell silence. For seven days he sat in silence with little food or drink. Finally on the seventh day, he stood up and said, "This cannot be borne!" He declared war on the Orcs and sent word to the corners of the world, calling on all the Seven Houses together for vengeance.
Nine years later at the Battle of Azanulbizar, the climax of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs the Thrór was avenged, and Thráin took the Azog's severed head and shoved the purse of coins into his mouth then set it on a stake.

So with a small company of kin and faithful followers they made the great wandering south, until they reached the hills of Dunland.

On a Midyear's Day, Thrór created his map of the Desolation. With runes he wrote information about entering Erebor from a secret way. He used Moon-letters for this.

Dunland, and the journey to Moria
Why Thrór and his people chose to settle in Dunland is not clear, but they tried to make a living. However twenty years after the Sack of Erebor despondent and homeless, Thrór left his people and went north with a single companion, and old friend Nár, but not before giving his son Thráin II his Ring of Power, along with the map and key to the Lonely Mountain. Thrór wished to see the fabled city of his ancestors, Khazad-dûm.

Eventally they made it over the Redhorn Pass down into Azanulbizar the Dimrill Dale. And when Thrór came to the East-gate of Moria he found it open. Nár begged him to beware, but he took no heed of him, and walked through the gates as the heir who had returned. But he did not come back.

Death
Nár stayed nearby for many days in hiding until one day he heard the blast of a horn, and Thrór's body was flung out of the Gate and onto the steps; his head was severed and lay face downward. As he crept near, he saw branded across his forehead in Dwarvish runes the name AZOG.

Azog then called out to him from the Gate with a warning that beggars who would not wait at his doors but instead sneaked in to attempt thieving, would fare the same fate. Azog then proclaimed that he had murdered Thrór and that he ruled Moria. He demanded that Nár deliver the message to the family of Thrór. Nár was barred from retrieving the head of Thrór. As a final insulting gesture, he was struck with a small pouch of coins of little worth. Weeping, Nár took the pouch and fled down the Silverlode. He looked back and saw that Orcs had emerged from the Gate and were hacking Thrór's body into pieces and throwing them to the crows.
