Swertings is a name referring to the Haradrim. The word was Hobbitish, used among the Hobbits of the secluded Shire. Only legends about them reached the Hobbits: the Swertings lived in the Sunlands and rode to war on oliphaunts.[1]

Etymology

Swerting is a word related to the term 'Swarthy Men' used in the Common Speech (where 'swarthy' is an old word for 'dark-skinned').[2]

Swerting is an Old English name, referring to a legendary character, also mentioned in Beowulf.
